Building a relationship that maximises independence

...

Supporting independence is central to all aspects of care work

Emily has cerebral palsy, and lives independently in her own home. She is supported by a team of live-in personal assistants, including Janet and Jess. Emily is clear about having her own time and space. Janet talks about how they gradually got to know each other over the first few months, to find the best ways of working together. The professional friendship they have grown together gives Emily the independence she needs

As you watch, ask yourself...

  • Thinking about a person you support - do you have a way of knowing when to give them some space?

  • This really matters with live-in carers - how may it work in other settings too?
