Communicating well with communication disabilities

Understanding changes to communication and giving people time to talk

In this video Alison interviews her own home care workers Amy and Laura about her communication needs. They have an interesting conversation about some of the challenges, and how they have overcome them. Alison's voice is affected by her multiple system atrophy (MSA). Her communication is continuing to change. She talks about what is most important to her, to make her feel listened to. Amy and Laura reflect on how they have adapted to Alison's communication needs.

As you watch, ask yourself...

  • Good communication can take time - but why might this save time overall?

  • Thinking about a person you support - how could you ask them what they need from you to communicate well?
