Going shopping - Emily negotiates the supermarket

...

Supporting people's choices and routines by giving them time and space

Emily's live-in PAs Jess is accompanying her to the supermarket. Emily knows what she likes to buy, and takes the lead in the shop. Her cerebral palsy means her speech is slower and less clear. Also, her limb movements can be unpredictable. Jess respects Emily's routine and autonomy. She gives Emily the time and space to do her shopping tasks. She considers carefully when to offer help. Watch part two as well to hear Emily's 'director's commentary'

As you watch, ask yourself...

  • What impact could it have on Emily if Jess took over as soon as Emily struggles?

  • Thinking of someone you support - is there a way you could give them more time by adjusting your routines?
