Using a hoist - Alison reflects on her experience

...

Understanding people's experience of their symptoms can help you adapt your support

Alison's home care workers Amy and Laura come every morning to get her up, dressed and ready for the day. They finish by seating Alison in her favourite armchair. Until a few months ago Alison was able to stand and transfer with her PA Emma. But her husband Stephen saw how her balance and strength were changing, and they asked for more support. Alison knows she needs this help, and is gradually getting used to the changes. She now needs two home care workers and a standing hoist. But it is quite a challenge for her, and Amy and Laura recognise this. They have learned what makes Alison anxious, and have evolved ways to reassure her.

As you watch, ask yourself...

  • Why do you feel Alison's symptoms make her feel anxious about the hoist?

  • Amy and Laura use various strategies to reassure Alison - which ones could you maybe adopt?
